Monroe was full of surprises last week as staff joined together for an “Underground Spirit Week”! Each day brought a new secret theme for students to figure out—Monday’s “Anything but a Cup Day” started things off, then came “Lumberjack Day”, “Mustache Day”, “Dress Like Your Favorite Holiday”, and “Twin Day” on Friday. Students loved the fun and excitement of seeing their favorite staff dressed up all week long!

This week kicked off our Underground Spirit Week for staff — and students had no clue! Monday was “Anything but a Cup” Day, and let’s just say the creativity was off the charts. From watering cans to wheelbarrows, our teachers proved you can sip in style (without a cup)! The students’ reactions? Absolutely priceless.

On Thursday, October 2, Monroe Elementary held its annual PTO “Walk for Monroe” fundraiser. The day was filled with energy, smiles, and school spirit—and ended with an exciting announcement: our students raised an incredible $30,415.81! This morning, Monroe Elementary hosted a special dedication ceremony to honor two new additions to the school that celebrate both innovation and tradition.

Dr. Ward’s Outdoor Classroom was officially opened as a space for students to explore, learn, and connect with nature. Just steps away, Mrs. Biddle’s Bookshelf was unveiled in the library a curated collection of favorite student reads inspired by the beloved former reading teacher.

The event featured remarks from school leadership, the PTO President, and district representatives, all reflecting on the importance of creating meaningful moments for children. Drawing inspiration from Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, the theme of the morning centered on how small, intentional moments can leave lasting impacts on a child’s life.

Following the ceremony, guests gathered in the MPR to connect. It was a joyful morning filled with warmth, gratitude, and community spirit.

These new spaces will serve as daily reminders of the educators who helped shape Monroe Elementary—and the moments that continue to shape its future.

Parent Pick Up/Drop Off Reminder

At Monroe Elementary, the safety of our students is our top priority. To keep arrival and dismissal running smoothly and safely, we are asking all families to follow our updated Pick-Up & Drop-Off Procedures.

Here’s what you need to know:

Enter Through the Monroe Township Building Loop
All cars must enter through the Monroe Township Building loop (see orange route on the map). This keeps traffic off the main road and ensures a steady flow of vehicles.

Drive Slowly
Please reduce your speed as you enter the loop and approach the school. Watch for staff, other vehicles, and students walking to and from school.

Do Not Block Entrances or Exits
Keep traffic moving by avoiding stopping in front of the school entrance or exit.

Stay Off the Road and Shoulder
For everyone’s safety, do not wait on the main road or shoulder. All waiting vehicles should remain in the loop.

Be Kind and Allow Merges

As traffic merges near the end of the loop, please be courteous. Allowing others to merge keeps things moving for everyone.

By following these guidelines, you’re helping us create a safe and efficient process for all Monroe families. Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to our students’ safety!

Vehicles must enter through the Monroe Township Building loop (orange dotted line) and proceed slowly to the school. Key reminders on the map include: drive slowly, do not block entrances, do not sit on the road or shoulder, and allow cars to merge at the Y intersection. Areas not to enter or park are marked with red Xs, and important points are labeled with signs such as STOP, DO NOT ENTER, and SLOW.
🎯 Game On, Monroe! 🎯

This year, Monroe Elementary is leveling up with our school-wide theme: Game On, Monroe! 🕹️🎲 Inspired by classic board games and sprinkled with a few video game elements, our theme is all about strategy, teamwork, and a little friendly competition. Just like in our favorite games, every move we make this year will be about learning, growing, and working together toward a common goal.

But this theme is more than fun and games—it connects directly to our Portrait of an Eagle here in Cumberland Valley School District. Since 2022, our Portrait of an Eagle has been guiding how we teach, learn, and prepare our students for the future. It focuses on seven key competencies our students practice daily:

💬 Communication – Collaborating with teammates, explaining ideas, and listening carefully.
🧠 Critical Thinking – Making strategic moves and evaluating options.
🛠 Problem Solving – Finding creative solutions when the path forward isn’t obvious.
🔄 Adaptability – Adjusting plans when the “rules” change or a new challenge pops up.
💪 Confidence – Believing in our ability to take on challenges and keep going.
💗 Empathy – Respecting and valuing every player on the team.
✅ Responsibility – Owning our actions and contributing to a positive learning environment.

Just like a game requires planning, cooperation, and perseverance, our school year will be filled with opportunities for students to practice these skills in real and meaningful ways. Whether it’s a classroom project, a playground activity, or a school-wide event, we’re ready to roll the dice, take the leap, and work together to win—both in learning and in life.

Game on, Monroe! Let’s make this year a high score!

HE'S RUNNING INTO RETIREMENT // We share with mixed emotions that our therapy dog, Banjo, is stepping into a well-deserved retirement this summer. Thank you for welcoming Banjo into our school community and for offering him endless amounts of love and support during his tenure with CV. Said Banjo's handler, Alexis Toburen, our district social worker, "Banjo has shown me the true power of animals and their impact on students and staff daily. I am so grateful for the opportunity to share him with you, and I know he will miss coming to school each day." Please help us celebrate Banjo and wish him well as he heads into a well-deserved retirement. Video montage of Banjo courtesy Ms. Toburen: https://www.wevideo.com/view/3466374730
