Disconnect to Reconnect

Disconnect to Reconnect

Staff Writer: Zoya Hasan, Grade 7

You open up your birthday present, and you can’t stop smiling. There it is, the phone you have been wanting since it hit the market. With its amazing features and sleek design, you can’t stop playing with it.

Many middle schoolers own a smartphone, but do they all use it wisely? Are you addicted to your phone?

When you are walking through the hallway, and you see a teacher coming, you immediately look down and hide your phone. Don’t deny it. Even if you don’t do this, you know you have seen people do it before. Many middle-schoolers abuse the freedom that they are given, and they are snapchatting throughout class.

Whether it is social media, or just using your phone to look up the definition of a word, you are still using your phone for mostly everything from listening to music, messaging a friend, or using it to research information. The portable device in your pocket may seem like gold to you, but what you can’t see is the way your phone is hurting you. Have you ever been to a fast food place to eat? Have you noticed that people are always on their phones? These tiny portable computers are limiting face to face conversation!

Have you ever had a screen free day where you don’t watch TV, use your phone or computer, and don’t use any social media? I encourage you to unplug.

UNPLUG and talk to each other. Consider joining me in not turning on your computer, opening any apps on your phone, or using Facebook, Twitter, or CandyCrush for 24 hours, and write to us at EVKEY and let us know how your experience went. "Disconnect to Reconnect" may just take on an entirely new meaning to you.
