Over the years at Eagle View, Science Olympiad has been known to be one of the strengths of our school. It has been taken seriously, since it is a very competitive competition between students who study and practice for different types of events. These events specialize in a particular field of science with other team members.
WHAT’S NEW?
During the first few months of the new 2018-2019 school year, students were found studying and practicing for the tryouts in September. The week of the tryouts lasted three days and two hours after school. Almost 35 people had tried out for the team! Unfortunately, only 15 would be moved up to the “A” team. Although this was the case, the rest of the students will still be able to participate and be on the “B” team. The 3 days of tryouts included a series of tests which included building bridges (mystery architecture) and a bonus rollercoaster event. All team members really enjoyed a stressful, but all worth it kind of moment as they ended on September 27th. Eagle View Science Olympiad is ready now to kick off a winning season this year and has high expectations in terms of goal setting which will drive the team to success.
OUR COACH:
Our head coach, Mr. Irvin (8RB science teacher) puts lots of dedication into the team and pushes them to maximum success. He looks forward to an amazing Science Olympiad season, and he is ready to coach a strong team.
When asked of Mr. Irvin’s first impression of the EV team roster, Irvin said, “Excitement because we have a lot of committed and enthusiastic people!”
Mr. Irvin thinks the team's strengths are our team’s dedication and our excellence in study events. These study events are events that are prepared for ahead of time and then tested on at the competition.Therefore, when asked to explain a method of pushing the team, Mr. Irvin states that, “I’m going to push you guys by giving you more tests and letting you compete with each other”. Hence, the team will possess a strong quality of competitiveness. Lastly, Mr. Irvin says that the improvements he is expecting are a more focused team and teammates that get along better than last year.
WHAT DOES THE SCIENCE OLYMPIAD TEAM THINK?
Meghaa Shanmugam, a former Science Olympiad team member says, “In Scioly, I’ve crossed many great challenges and categories in science. What I love is that there is an explicit amount of events to choose from, matching any individual’s interest”.
Simran Kulkarni, who began Science Olympiad in 7th grade, proudly says, “Here, Science Olympiad is really great. It lets you experience something you probably wouldn’t be able to experience anywhere else”.
Aapthi Kavuri, a new addition to the Science Olympiad team expresses, “I believe that Science Olympiad is an opportunity to experience new situations in which you learn what the true meaning of collaborative work is. The environment of this club is very inviting and open”.
Shaivi Tomar, “I feel like the people in Science Olympiad are very much like a community and we love to joke around with each other. It isn’t just studying or building for events, we love to have fun along the way.”
Ishita Mitra, another Science Olympiad member, states that “Science Olympiad is a place for people to discover their passions in the field of science. It is a great way to spend time after school doing something you love.”
Logan Tokle, a High School Science Olympiad member, states that “Science Olympiad is great for anybody who really likes any field of the STEM field: Science like Biology, Chemistry, or Physics, Technology events such as Game On, Engineering events such as Tower building or Roller Coaster, or Math events such as Thermodynamics. There is something for any and everybody.”
